Popular locations for antique light fixtures
Hallway
The most popular antique lighting solution for a hallway is an antique lantern. Lanterns used to be lit by candles, and the circular glass would protect the flame from blowing out in draughts or when the front door was opened.
Hall lanterns were extremely popular in grand Georgian homes. In the Georgian era, both glass and candles were extremely heavily taxed, so a grand hall light was a status symbol that showed the homeowner was wealthy enough to afford both glass and candles!
Kitchen
Historically, areas such as the kitchen would have used very utilitarian lighting, probably tallows (which preceded candles and were made of animal fat). However, as electricity began to be installed, these less grand areas would be lit by pendants, such as the classic white glass coolie pendants that were popular in Edwardian times.
Drawing Room
A crystal chandelier was the more opulent antique light fixture for a drawing room, and they remain popular today. Original antique crystal chandeliers are extremely valuable, especially those by famous makers such as Perry & Co., Hancock & Rixon, and F&C Osler. Crystal chandeliers first appeared in Venice in the late 1500s and were dressed with rock crystal, as it refracted the light beautifully and created a sense of luxury. It was George Ravenscroft, an Englishman, who invented lead crystal, which was easier to cut and more transparent than rock crystal. This is when chandeliers became really popular.
Despite evolving through the centuries, especially with the introduction of gas and then electricity as a source of power, the very best examples of chandeliers are arguably still those from the Georgian and Victorian periods. So, if you are looking for an impressive feature light to add glamour and sophistication to your interior decor, you can’t go wrong with an antique crystal chandelier.
