Find Your Perfect Light: Answering Your Lighting Questions
Lighting is more than just functional it can transform your space, set the mood, and reflect your unique style. But with so many options available, choosing the right light fittings for your home can feel overwhelming.
Whether you’re an existing customer with a stunning piece already pinned to your mood board or a new visitor exploring our range for the first time, we’re here to help! A special piece of lighting could be the crucial last addition to really make your property stand out from the crowd.
To make your decision easier, we’ve answered some of the most common questions about lighting fittings, from selecting the right size and style to understanding quality and durability. Here’s everything you need to know to find the perfect light for your space.
What are light fittings?
A ‘light fitting’ is a fixture that provides illumination for task activities, to create ambient light, to highlight architectural features or simply to dress a space. They are mostly electric, historically however, they have been gas, oil and candles.
How do I decide what type of lighting I need?
Firstly you need to decide on what you need the light fitting to do, is it to create ambiance and mood or is it for task based activities e.g. reading, office work etc. Once you understand what it is to achieve you can then narrow down what lighting you need.
What size light fitting is right for my space? (different spaces like living room, bathroom etc)
There are a few considerations when selecting the size of a light fitting (aside from specifically its technical function). Such as, how high you should hang a light fixture. If it’s a pendant fitting (i.e. a suspended fitting like a chandelier or lantern) and you can walk under it, you need approx. 2.1m (6 ’10”) clearance. If it’s over a dining table or kitchen island you generally need a clearance of 1.8m (5.10″) of the finished floor height. In most homes this will determine the size of a fitting. If ceiling height does not present a restriction it then becomes a consideration of shape and form and we tend to think about proportion relative to the space. In most cases bigger is better.
How can I match the light fitting style to my home decor?
It is nice to introduce some continuity between your lighting fittings and your general decoration – maybe match up metal finish with door furniture or use a colour flex. However, it is more important to specify something that you love, fits the space and functions as required. I like to think of the light fittings selected as pieces of art – buy fittings you love and represent your personality and style.
How can I be sure I’m choosing the right quality and durability?
Beautiful lighting isn’t necessarily cheap. Buy the best you can afford and items that you love. Importantly, make sure they are fully serviceable (e.g. lamps can be changed and parts can be cleaned). At Fritz Fryer Lighting, every part of fixtures can be repaid or replaced. As product designers it is our environmental responsibility to ensure items are durable and serviceable – just like the antiques of old. So that these cherished items get handed down from one generation to the next with a little tlc between.
