How to choose living room lighting?

Size is an important factor when choosing your living room fittings. You really don’t want the light to be overpowering in the space, so for a smaller living room it is best to pick a light that is not too large. Alternatively, if the living room lighting is too small, the decorative value of the fitting will be lost and it may not emit enough light to effectively illuminate the room.

Consider the height of your ceilings when selecting hanging ceiling lights for living rooms. As a general rule, we suggest that pendant lights be 2.1m from the floor. If your ceilings are slightly lower, this may mean shortening your pendant cable slightly, or lengthening them if you have high ceilings. You want your pendant light to be at this ideal height from the floor so that they are not too high in the room to have decorative or practical impact. Too low and you are in danger of banging your head against them.

The overall style of the living room reflects you and what you like.

For those with a love for a more minimalist style, modern living room lights such as our range of contemporary glass lights offer a beautiful simplicity that will work well in a minimalist sitting room.

Scandi style spaces can be perfectly decorated with a shade made of natural materials, like our wicker lighting collection.

Living room lighting, when positioned in the correct areas, will help to form an inviting atmosphere that is essential to this area of the home.

For a cosy spot to read in, place a standing lamp next to a sofa or armchair for practical and ambient lighting.

Silk wall lights on either side of a sofa emit a warm glow during the darker evenings, concentrating any light up through the shade, as opposed to dispersing it brightly throughout.

Positioning a cluster or chandelier at the centre of the living room will add a fantastic feature piece and central focal point, bringing balance and beauty to the space, as well as plenty of light.

When selecting the lighting for your living room, ask yourself what its purpose will be. Will it be for aesthetic or practical purposes?

Including table lamps within your living room lighting design will add an additional dimension and layer of light to the room, as well as being practical when placed beside a chair.

A central hanging light, when supported by other sources of light, can act as a decorative feature that will draw eyes to the centre of the room. It is also an opportunity to really show off your style.

When the evenings get darker, avoid losing out on the beauty of your artwork by installing picture lights above or below the piece. The light will bounce from the art, further adding to the ambient atmosphere you have created.

Wall & Picture lights

5 amp circuit

If it is possible to achieve this in your sitting room, have both your table and standard lamps on a 5 amp circuit which can be switched on at the door. This transforms these fittings from only occasionally used living room lights, to a part of the rooms overall lighting scheme.
