Suspension

Understanding the suspension of your stairwell lights is important, ensuring that they hang safely and illuminate the correct areas.

Consider whether the ceiling that the light is being suspended from is sloped or flat. Is there a void for internal connection? Does the fixture require bespoke installation because your stairwell has extraordinary features, such as a skylight?

Stairwell lighting can be a stunning and unforgettable feature within a home or commercial space, so it is important to make sure your style flows coherently from level to level.

Connecting the style of a period home from upstairs to downstairs can be achieved with a chandelier or lantern.

A stairwell in a modern-style office building would look incredible with a bespoke cluster installation.

Size

The size of your stairwell lighting really depends on the size of the area you are looking to light. You don’t want the fitting to be too large and overpower the space.

If your staircase has high ceilings or you need the light fitting to be visible from multiple levels, we offer long drop stairwell lighting solutions. These include ceiling lights and clusters with customisable lengths. Alternatively, we can provide extra chain for a chandelier so that it hangs at the right level.

In a smaller stairwell, consider lighting that can be shortened or a smaller fitting. If you are sourcing wall lighting, look for fittings that have a shallower projection so that they won’t be knocked when people walk up and down the stairs.

Purpose

Understanding the purpose of your staircase lights will help you to decide on the lighting you’d like to decorate it with. If it is going to be the primary source of lighting, ensure that the lights are bright enough to climb your stairs safely.

If you are including practical wall lighting or spotlights, but would like to add a decorative piece to supplement these other forms of light, a lantern or chandelier would look gorgeous in this space.
